What is HIFU?
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a relatively new cosmetic Skin Tightening Treatment for skin tightening that is considered a noninvasive and painless replacement for face-lift. It uses ultrasound energy to encourage the production of collagen, which results in firmer skin.
HIFU is approved by the US-FDA for facelifts and for skin tightening.
The procedure is also used for overall facial rejuvenation, lifting, tightening, and body contouring, to lift the fat in stubborn areas such as arms, love handles, or chin.
How does HIFU work?
HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to target the layers of skin just below the surface. The ultrasound energy causes the tissue to heat up rapidly.
Once the cells in the targeted area reach a certain temperature, they experience cellular damage. While this may seem counterintuitive, the damage actually stimulates the cells to produce more collagen — a protein that provides structure to the skin.
The increase in collagen results in tighter, firmer skin Trusted Source with fewer wrinkles. Since the high-frequency ultrasound beams are focused on a specific tissue site below the skin’s surface, there’s no damage to the upper layers of the skin and adjacent tissue.
In general, the procedure works best on people older than 30 with mild-to-moderate skin laxity.
Benefits of high-intensity focused ultrasound
HIFU has many aesthetic benefits, including:
- wrinkle reduction
- tightening sagging skin on the neck (sometimes called turkey neck)
- lifting the cheeks, eyebrows, and eyelids
- enhancing jawline definition
- tightening of the décolletage
- smoothing the skin
What does HIFU feel like?
HIFU is a safe procedure, with bare-minimum downtime.
You may experience slight heat during the HIFU procedure. Some people describe it as tiny electric pulses or a slight prickly sensation.
Immediately after the Skin Tightening Treatments, you may experience mild redness or swelling, which will gradually recede over the next few hours.
HIFU treatment for face side effects
HIFU is considered very safe if performed by a trained and qualified professional.
The best part about these Skin Tightening Treatments is that you’re able to resume your normal activities immediately after you leave the clinic. Some slight redness or swelling may occur, but it should subside quickly. A light tingling sensation of the treated area may persist for a few weeks.
Rarely, you may experience temporary numbness or bruising, but these side effects usually go away after a few days.
Types of skin tightening treatments
When you’re born, your skin is rich with proteins called elastin and collagen. These proteins carry your face structure and pliantness. As you age, your body’s production of these proteins slows down. As a result, your skin starts to lose its pliantness.
Thanks to graveness, pollution exposure, stress, and the hundreds of movements that your facial muscles make every day, your skin might start to appear stretched or baggy. Other factors, similar to gestation and weight loss, can also contribute to stretch marks and sagging skin.
Nonsurgical skin tensing treatments target areas of your skin that have come loose and stimulate collagen products underneath that skin. The two main types of treatment are-
- in-office procedures performed by a trained provider
- at- home bias you can use to give yourself treatment
